The Engine Room Arrangement Model (ERAM) project was part of the United States Navy's Mid-Term Sealift Technology Development Program, which was initiated during the mid-1990s. The goal was to develop advanced modular concepts that included standard multi-deck level assemblies representing large vertical segments of ship machinery spaces. In 1996, using the strategic sealift conversion and new construction contracts as the focus, my company, NASSCO, was awarded a study subcontract to develop the standard machinery unit concept. This was achieved with involvement from several U.S. shipyards, design agencies, and foreign shipyards (notably in Japan and Germany) along with the benchmarking of commercial industries-which, at the time, were more advanced in equipment unitization strategies than was U.S. shipbuilding.
