Though we're still waiting for flying cars and jetpacks, a somewhat more mundane technology forever in the future has gotten a boost from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute. The latter, more conveniently known as UMTRl, has begun a year-long study to determine how well cars, trucks, and buses can let each other know where they are, and whether cars with advanced intelligent systems can warn drivers to avoid potential collisions.
