Alfa Romeo was the BMW of the 1960s. Back then, Alfa sedans, coupes, and sports cars delivered almost exactly the same combination of sporty driving dynamics and daily utility that BMW later stumbled upon with the 2002tii and turned into marketing gold. At a time when the average American compact made do with drum brakes, cross-ply tires, three-on-the-tree manual transmission, and a wheezy pushrod straight-six under the hood, the average Alfa boasted a snarly twin-cam four up front-often with dual Weber carbs-a five-speed floor shift, disc brakes all around, and grippy radial tires. Call it the penultimate driving machine. Founded in Milan in 1910, Alfa also had a heritage to warm the heart of any red-blooded auto enthusiast. Like any self-respecting Italian automaker, Alfa went racing almost as soon as it had bolted an engine and wheels to a chassis.
