I breathed a sigh of relief as the boat cleared the railway bridge that sets the 49-foot controlling height for the St. Lucie Canal stretch of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. The owner of the 60-foot sportfisherman I was delivering had sworn that the boat's tuna tower would be two feet short of the clearance. He was right, but the radio antenna still played a tune on the uppermost girders of the bridge as we slid beneath it. Although darkness had set in, we had only a few more miles of tight waterway to travel before our layover at Indiantown Marina. But as I was to learn, my sigh of relief had been premature; our worries were not over yet.
