A vhf radio is the most important piece of electronic equipment aboard your boat, because it allows you to communicate with other boats and with land, which is vital in an emergency situation. Some small boats rely on only a one-watt handheld, which can transmit only a mile or two, but which has its own antenna and power supply. Most boats have a 25-watt VHF (powered by the boat's battery) installed at the helm and connected to an antenna that's as high as possible-the higher the antenna, the farther its range. Ideally they also carry a handheld as a backup.
