Letters from the VHFers

I operated portable from Fox Peak in Oregon in rare grid CN98 during the July CQ World Wide VHF Contest. On Saturday, July 18, through Monday, July 20,I operated with Ed, N7PHY, and Brian, KJ4ZTP, at a 6,200-foot altitude on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountain Range, where the horizon is a little below 0 degrees facing most of the US. Our operating location from Fox Peak (CN98vc) had excellent propagation. I made 254 contacts in 124 grid squares, using mostly 250 W. My favorite contact was with Edfel, KP4AJ, in Puerto Rico at 5,793 kilometers. The 6-meter band had openings most of the time, and generally. small regions came in strongly. We worked FN01 to FN43 with a double-hop sporadic E from Pennsylvania to New Hampshire.
