I'm at the helm and running 30 knots in Maine's Penobscot Bay when Bentley Collins calls for an emergency stop. In a single motion I yank the throttles from full ahead to full astern and hang on for a fast stop. There's a slight hesitation and then a sudden rumble as the props churn, yet amazingly there's no drivetrain damage. "You can do what you just did because of Volvo's electronically controlled diesel engines," says Collins, who is vice president of Sabre Yachts.
