I have a photo from an old issue of the IGFA's "International Angler" that shows sportfishing legends Michael Lerner, Capt. Tommy Gifford and Larry Bagby in a 15-foot dory whose starboard gunwale, weighed down by the massive head of a broadbill swordfish, is level with the water. The 500-plus-pound fish topped the existing record. I knew Tommy Gifford during the last years of his Me in St. Thomas. Gifford loved to tell stories about catches like that Nova Scotia swordfish—big fish taken from small boats. And I loved to listen.
