'PARKED' FOR A REASON?

A 1995 Ford E150 Club Wagon was dropped off at our shop. I recognized that it was owned by a "semi-regular" customer named Bill. The note read: "It won't shift out of park." From that description, I immediately suspected the brake light switch. Bill's wife called a little later and said, "Bill didn't want to have to pay for a tow so he pkyed around with it. He eventually forced it out of park and drove it over." I told her that we were busy, but one of us would look at it as soon as possible. When a break came, Tony, one of our technicians, grabbed his test light and headed for the van. A few minutes later, he reported that the shifter wouldn't go into park and the shift linkage would barely move. The next step was to remove the lower steering column cover and see why the linkage was so tight. With the lower cover removed we could see what had happened.
