Back in June, I questioned the assumption that technology makes cars safer. I criticized carmakers for replacing radio knobs with a computer menu, and most especially for building cars that use computers to operate the throttle, brakes and steering. With drivers' inputs being second-guessed, I fear we'll create a population of "dumbed-down" and uninvolved drivers. I concluded that companies make cars this way because they can and because automakers must develop these high-tech vehicles to keep their products competitive in the market.
