Back in the early 1980s when computer-controlled engine management was introduced on domestic vehicles, the scan tool gave technicians a glimpse into the feared "black box." Although parameter data was available on only a few models, the ability to run self-diagnosis and read and clear DTCs became a necessity to properly repair the vehicle. Unfortunately, there was no continuity between how the OEMs identified their DTCs, so each brand had its own unique listings.
