HOW TO PROPERLY USE VEHICLE LIFT LOCKS

Every time a technician raises a vehicle for service on a lift designed with mechanical locks, the lift should be "lowered to locks" before starting work. This is outlined in the Automotive Lift Institute's (ALI) Lifting It Right lift safety training course and in most lift operating manuals. Doing so relieves the lift's hydraulic pressure, reducing the chance that the vehicle will freefall if the hydraulic system fails.
