Latest port throughput figures for April reveal that, although recovering, coal export volumes from Australia are running far from optimal levels due to a lack of available cargoes. The chart, right, shows that combined exports from the three largest terminals in Queensland in April reached 10.7 Mt, some 24% below the year-ago levels. At Gladstone, April throughput actually declined from the previous month with 3.8 Mt (compared with 4.8 Mt in April 2010). Exports from both Dalrymple Bay and Hay Point in April did mark an improvement on March, but failed to recover to volumes typical for this time of year.
