The slowdown in activity that had beset the ship demolition sector in July and August persisted in September, with just 85 units totalling 2.44mdwt (0.70 mlwt) reported sold in the month. This was the third lowest monthly volume seen in 2014 to date and took sales in the first 9 months of the year to 804 ships of 27.92mdwt (6.92mlwt). While higher than the 776 vessels that had been sold for breaking in the same period of 2013, this was still down by 5.00mdwt (-15.2%) in cargo-carrying terms, amid lower disposals of larger ships. Within this overall total, sales of oil carriers lagged year-earlier levels by 1.9mdwt (-18.8%), with those of non-tankers recording a decline of 3.1mdwt (-13.6%).
