India's Coal Import Growth Contrasts With Wider Trend

This year has seen substantial rises for India's coal imports, with potential for further growth to come. With data for 31 ports during April-September inclusive putting coal imports up 18.5% year -on-year at 110.2 Mt, SSY projects India's imports will reach close to 215 Mt in 2014. This would represent an annual gain of approximately 30 Mt, all the more eye-catching given that this year is expected to see world seaborne coal trade volumes decrease for the first time since 1993 against a background of soft import demand from Europe and China.
