Global crude steel output fell on an annual basis in every month of 2015, with the pace of decline accelerating as the year progressed to leave output for the full year down 2.9% on 2014 at 1,599.5 Mt. This is the first annual decline in global steel output since 2009, according to the World Steel Association (see first chart, right). Nevertheless, this is still higher than production was three years ago. The fall in steel output has come against the backdrop of slowing economic activity in major steel producing and consuming countries and a sharp drop in steel prices that has led to many mills posting significant loses.
