The US government's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium imports was at the fore of the recent G7 summit in Canada. The meeting came shortly after the US announced it would impose tariffs on steel (25%) and aluminium (15%) imported from the EU, Canada and Mexico, which had all been temporarily exempted to allow trade negotiations to take place. These three accounted for 40% of total US steel imports in 2017 (13.8 Mt).
