Porterbrook leasing has revealed that it is to spend £800,000 creating a Class 144'demonstrator'to show that Pacers can be refurbished for service beyond 2020 at reasonable cost. A two-car Northern Class 144 is to go to RVEL in Derby for three months where it will be fully refitted to comply with the PRM TSI (disability) regulations. Passenger information systems, Wi-Fi and priority seating will be fitted along with a new accessible toilet. The seats in the unit will be new - it will lose eight seats but will gain additional standing space for 12 passengers (assuming the wheelchair spaces are not taken).
