PORTERBROOK PACER PROJECT TO CONTINUE

Porterbrook has stated that it will continue with its project to create a Class 144 demonstrator to show that Pacers could remain in service after 2020, in spite of the Northern franchise Invitation to Tender requiring all Pacers to be withdrawn from the franchise by that date. In a statement, the company said:'lt is our opinion that a fully refurbished and modernised Class 144 train can and will offer a cost-effective solution to the overcrowding partly created by a shortage of rolling stock in the UK.' It says that the fully refurbished train is still expected to be returned to Northern Rail in April.
