When I was at school there were all these swotty girls with boxed sets of Derwent coloured pencils who would produce the most exquisite diagrams of the main exports of Peru or the internal organs of a frog. I, on the other hand, was lucky if my pencil case contained a handful of pencils in garish primary colours. As a result my diagrams were, shall we say, industrial. Glancing covetously at the next desk, I thought'lf only I had a boxed set of 25, neatly sharpened, coloured pencils my homework, too, would be transformed'. A teenage delusion, of course. If we had swopped pencils, the swotty girls would still have got A+ to my B-.
