It is all too easy for people like me, with the privilege of a column in a leading magazine, to have a whinge about the inconvenience caused by a missed connection. But equally, as someone embedded in the industry, finding out why the connection was missed can be illuminating. So here goes. Feedback, as always, welcome. This was the journey plan to get to the opening of the Hitachi plant at Newton Aycliffe. 07.01 off Welwyn Garden City. Arrive Stevenage 07.12. Connect into the 07.28 VirginTrains East Coast to York. Change at York for Darlington. A check with Live Departures just after 06.30 showed the train 4min late. But at WGC station the arrivals board showed it alternating between 13-14min late, due to signalling problems at Finsbury Park.
