It is all too easy for people like me, with the privilege of a column in a leading magazine, to have a whinge about the inconvenience caused by a missed connection. Change at York for Darlington. A check with Live Departures just after 06.30 showed the train 4min late. But at WGC station the arrivals board showed it alternating between 13-14min late, due to signalling problems at Finsbury Park.
