MARCH REOPENING FOR SETTLE & CARLISLE

The settle and Carlisle line between Armathwaite and Carlisle will reopen by the end of March 2017, according to Network Rail. The line has been closed since 9 February after movement was discovered in the embankment at Eden Brows, near Armathwaite, and in the weeks that followed the ground below the railway slipped to 1.5 metres below its normal level. NR says repairs to the 500,000-tonne landslip will involve construction of a tunnel-like structure that will sit beneath the railway to provide a stable base across the damaged ground.Two rows of high-strength piles will then be driven into the sloping bedrock of the Eden gorge, creating a corridor on which concrete slab will be placed to form a base for the tracks. The work is expected to cost £23 million.
