THE OFFICE of Rail and Road says the number of passenger journeys between April 2020 and March 2021 was the lowest recorded on the rail network since at least 1872, when records started. Just 388 million journeys were made in the period - 22% of the 1.739 billion made in the year before. In the final quarter of the year, 80 million journeys were made -down from the 139 million between October and December 2020, and the 133 million made between July and September. However, this was still far higher than the 35 million journeys made in April to June 2020, during the first coronavirus lockdown.
