Derby station is being modernised in a project that will see the platform canopies rebuilt at this major East Midlands hub. The green temporary hoardings at the station were erected in 2005 as a precautionary measure after engineers discovered faults in the concrete which makes up the existing platform canopies. Structural assessments showed that the canopies, constructed in the 1950s, could not be repaired and that the only viable option was to demolish the canopies and replace them. Edmund Nuttall is undertaking the rebuilding works at the station. As well as replacing the canopies, new lifts are being constructed between the station footbridge and platforms 2,3,4 and 6. Work got underway in earnest in February 2008 and is due to be completed in June 2009.
