A LIFETIME OF ENGINEERING

My elder brother and I had many a Christmas toy made by my father. The paint was often still tacky when we received them because he had to work on them after we had gone to bed. He was keen to pass his knowledge on to us and was equally adept at metalworking as woodworking. He made us such things as small steam driven stationary engines, using where necessary a small lathe at work and he often let us help him. Since these early beginnings I have always had access to or owned a workshop and an interest in engineering. One thing that he did show me was that quite complex things can be made with the minimum of tools. Mostly hand tools and man power.
