RCS revival: Can Google breathe new life into mobile operators' messaging services?

If ever there was a doomed mobile technology, Rich Communications Services (RCS) was probably it. After years of cyclical hope and disappointment, it's been on the brink of becoming the industry's most epic fail. But there are signs of an RCS revival and hope the technology can rise from the ashes of past failures. At Mobile World Congress in February, the GSMA, Google, and 19 mobile operators launched a new initiative to accelerate the availability of RCS on Android devices. The operators agreed to adopt a common, universal profile based on the GSMA's RCS specifications, while Google agreed to provide an Android RCS client in cooperation with operators and OEMs.
