1xEV-DO has surprised some with how far it's come since its beginnings in Qualcomm's HDR (High Data Rate) technology. EV-DO's reliance upon a dedicated carrier for data has never pleased certain vendors and operators. That aversion gave rise to 1xtreme, a technology promoted by Motorola and Nokia that later formed the basis for 1xEV-DV, which combines voice and data on a single channel. Nokia in particular put all of its eggs into the 1xEV-DV basket, while other vendors ran wild with 1xEV-DO, which has been commercially available since 2002.
