Rich messaging services are widely touted to supplant SMS. However, some serious challenges lie ahead for mobile email and IM, chief among which is persuading consumers to switch from a service they love, In February this year the SMS Forum closed its doors for good. The group, which fostered and promoted SMS within the wireless industry, announced that its objective of introducing universal standards for SMS had been achieved, and that no further work from the group was required.
