Playing our part in cancer research

Local government is at its best when enabling great people to do great things. Few periods have demonstrated that better than the past 18 months. As the NHS came under acute pressure at the height of the pandemic, councils rallied nurses and social workers to look after patients at home where it was safe to do so, freeing up space in hospitals for our brilliant NHS workers to tend to those with the most urgent needs. When dwindling supplies of protective equipment were failing to reach the people who needed it most, local government took control of the stock and used their local knowledge to ensure our doctors, nurses and care homes had the vital equipment they needed. These are lessons in how council resources, no matter how limited, can have outsized impacts when they are directed effectively. In Sutton we are applying these principles to the London Cancer Hub - driving the transformation of what is already a renowned centre of cancer drug discovery into a £lbn world leading life-science campus that will bring 13,000 new jobs into the borough.
