Gove takes helm at new levelling up department

Local government has welcomed the move to beef-up its lead department and put big political hitter Michael Gove in as the secretary of state. Mr Gove will take on a stronger lead on the levelling up agenda across the whole of Whitehall after moving from the Cabinet Office to the newly-rebranded Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC). He will retain responsibility for the devolved administrations and elections. Chief executive of think-tank Localis, Jonathan Werran, said: 'Michael Gove has a track record in dealing with difficult delivery departments...he brings a sense of renewal to the role. It should give a bit of cheer that local government will be treated seriously.'
