Council tax plans more like 'a threat'

Government plans to give councils the option to raise council tax feels more like a 'threat' than an opportunity, finance expert Rob Whiteman has said. Speaking to a virtual session of the Solace Summit, Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy chief executive Mr Whiteman warned it put councils in a tough position. 'On the one hand, it would be very good for the sector,' he said. 'On the other hand, the sector can't easily imagine putting up tax levels and would prefer to be given more money from government.'
