Collective call for council powers on climate change

A Government strategy to tackle the climate crisis must recognise the role of councils, a coalition of organisations has urged.The group of local government, environmental and research organisations have called for powers and resources for local authorities as part of the Government's net-zero strategy.A paper by the Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning and Transport, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace UK, London Environment Directors' Network, chief executives' organisation Solace and others argued councils were best placed to foster behavioural change in areas such as housing and transport due to their 'closer relationship with local communities'.
