Spooks at the National Cyber Security Centre helpfully drew up an 'assessment of the cyber threat to elections' ahead of the local elections. Less helpful was the fact that many councils only received it six days before the polls, with it being belatedly passed on to chief executives just before the bank holiday weekend. One excuse could have been the dizzying array of organisations on the distribution list for the briefing - from the Atomic Weapons Establishment to the UK Space Agency, whose interest in the integrity of council elections seems tenuous at best As one chief executive put it: 'So they remembered to send it to the Met Office and the Royal Family before they passed it on to councils, who actually run elections.'
