Money Matters

The current times are challenging for all of us, and our responses are a good test for local government to demonstrate its ability to discharge its community leadership function. It is interesting how, in times of difficulty, the public sector - of which local government represents a major part -is assumed to provide the answer to all ills. There's a downturn in the economy, so lets get the public sector to pay its bills more quickly and lift those non-existent capital projects off the shelf, blow off the dust, and, in no time at all, the economy will be right again. Of course, we have an important role to play in any upturn -but were we the cause of the problems in the first place?
