Duties fulfilled

Independent legal advice and a judgment from the district auditor confirmed that the London Borough of Tower Hamlets has fulfilled its legal duties with regard to the Government's code of recommended practice in its operation of East End Life. There are some inaccuracies in last week's statement from the Government. The consultation document says there is nothing in law to stop political advertising in print, however, the 1986 Local Government Act specifically prohibits political publicity. In its recent findings, OFCOM found the broadcasters involved, not Tower Hamlets Council, had breached the Communications Act 2003.
