The UK's domestic waste sector generates £6.8bn for the economy every year, according to a government report. The report on resource management, which was issued by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), said the sector currently generates around £6.8bn for the economy and supports around 103,000 jobs in the UK. But it adds this figure could increase to as much as £41bn if the definition is 'broadened' to include repairing, re-using and leasing to extend the life of products. The report also notes that over the past two decades, the gross added value of the waste and resource sector has grown at a faster rate than the wider economy. But it also states that the value of the sector 'fell considerably' at the start of the 2008/9 recession and has still not recovered to its pre-recession levels. 'The UK waste and resource management sector already makes a significant contribution to the economy, and this research shows there are even more opportunities out there,' said resource management minister Dan Rogerson. 'By building on this success and exporting our knowledge and expertise we can lead the way in new markets.
