NHS trusts take record level of government loans

NHS trusts had to borrow a record £2.8bn in the last financial year from the government in order to pay staff, energy bills and for patients' drugs, it has emerged. The Department of Health had to provide emergency bailouts on an unprecedented scale to two-thirds of hospital trusts in the 2015-16 financial year, as they were set to run out of funds.
