Local authority chief executives could be forgiven for experiencing a touch of schadenfreude in the current row over the salaries of university vice-chancellors. The universities minister Jo Johnson has given the new Office for Students the power to fine colleges that 'cannot justify' why they should earn more than the Prime Minister. The Committee of University Chairs representing 135 academic institutions has written to the Commons education committee saying such a link is 'simplistic' and 'unfair.'
