Radical Ministry of Defence (MoD) plans to outsource responsibility for procuring £14bn of military equipment annually, which could affect thousands of staff jobs in Bristol, have come under fire from a renowned think-tank. Experts from the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) have questioned the rationale for replacing Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), which employs 16,500 staff, with a so-called government-owned contractor-operated (GOCO) model. The potential upheaval to one of the South West's major public sector employers would place further strain on the region, which has already experienced the highest proportion of public sector job losses since 2010.
