Councils' outsourced services worth more than £32bn a year

The market for outsourced frontline council services is worth more than £32bn a year, according to a new report by the Business Services Association (BSA). The report, which was commissioned from Oxford Economics, sets out the value of the UK business services sector in a variety of markets, including to local and central government. In total, the report claims the business services sector is worth £263bn a year and employs around 3.3m people. It estimates contracts for outsourced council services turn over £32.2bn a year, compared to £3.7bn for central government and £12.2bn for frontline health contracts.
