The risk of losing business rates appeals needs to be held at a national level, a senior local government finance chief has argued. Director of resources at Newcastle City Council, Tony Kirkham, made the suggestion as the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) recognised that appeals were a 'huge issue'. Last week the DCLG announced that a 'reformed' ' business rates appeals process would come into effect in April. Communities secretary Greg Clark said: 'For too long we've had an appeals system where backlogged cases - often caused by unscrupulous agents eyeing up a fast buck - meant unnecessary costs and uncertainty for all involved.
