A recent spate of Ofsted inspections has rated as 'inadequate' children's services in Surrey CC and Sandwell MBC. Last week strategic leaders of Surrey CC's children's services came in for criticism from the watchdog for their failure to predict the impact of a major departmental overhaul. Inspectors found managers did not 'routinely rigorously challenge social work practice, including the poor quality of children in need work' and claimed senior managers lacked oversight of frontline practice or knowledge of the extent of service failings for children in need. In response, Surrey CC deputy leader, Cllr Peter Martin, said the county had already addressed the issue with an extra £2m investment to recruit more social workers.
