Government officials have launched a probe into Salford City Council's dealings with a local rugby club. The Department for Communities and Local Government said it was looking into concerns raised in a letter about the council. A meeting of the council's audit and accounts committee last week voted against an independent investigation into the £164,000 bail out of Salford City Reds, despite an internal review finding governance errors. The meeting heard that the council's strategic director for customer and support services Martin Vickers, who was also the authority's monitoring officer, had been involved in negotiating the bailout.
