The Local Government Association (LGA) has defended council chief executive salaries following the latest town hall 'rich list', published by the TaxPayers' Alliance (TPA). Chancellor George Osborne said he would issue councils with new pay guidelines for senior staff after the reseach claimed thousands of council staff earned six-figure sums. The TPA found 3,483 local authority employees received remuneration in excess of £100,000 over 2013/14. The LGA hit back at the figures, claiming councils needed to retain the 'right people' to deliver the 'complex' responsibilities of town halls.
