Cutbacks threaten retraining programme

Local skills plans involving the retraining of older workers - many from disadvantaged backgrounds -are under threat from cutbacks to adult skills budgets, experts have claimed this week. The warning follows news that education quango, the Skills Funding Agency (SFA), has announced a further 15% cutback to protect apprenticeships and traineeships offered to young people aged 18 to 24. Barbara Spicer, chief executive of the SFA has written confirming the level of cuts that will be transferred to independent private skills providers and further education colleges.
