The provision of public health services has recently undergone the biggest shift in decades. Since April 2013, councils have a new duty to protect and improve the health of their communities. Leading these public health duties are directors of public health and their teams who are charged with improving the health of the local population from within a unique environment. This is a new landscape for public health professionals, exciting and stretching at the same time. So in 2012 after discussion with key partners including the Association of Directors of Public Health and the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives we established the 'Aspirant Director of Public Health Leadership Programme' to prepare and enable future directors of public health to take on their new leadership role within local government.
