Give members more power to handle frontline role, say MPs

Councillors should be handed greater powers and support to fulfil their increasingly community-based role, an influential group of MPs has reported. A report by the communities and local government (CLG) select committee published today urges both local and central government to devolve powers and resources to help councillors manage their work on the frontline, such as dealing with constituents, businesses, voluntary bodies and GPs. Among the authorities singled out in the report, Sunderland City Council is mentioned for its role in developing a community leadership programme, while Hertfordshire CC is cited for its work in devolving budgets to councillors.
