Deadline to improve 'inadequate' services

Children's minister Edward Timpson has set a deadline of 22 July for Birmingham City Council to set out how it intends to sort out its under-fire children's services department. In a letter to council leader Sir Albert Bore, the minister said he wants to see a 'clear explanation' of the issues underlying each of the recommendations made in a damming report by Ofsted, which branded the service as 'inadequate', and how the council intends to address them. The report was published by the watchdog on 23 May and outlines 10 areas for immediate action, along with six for further improvement. It warns of widespread and serious failures that leave children and young people at risk of harm, including a legacy of poor management and practice.
