Blackpool towers again, as council investment pays off

Blackpool's tourism businesses have enjoyed significant long-term growth as a direct result of millions of pounds of local authority-led regeneration work, The MJ can reveal. The findings include infrastructure work by Blackpool Council on the seafront, South Pier construction and historic tower, which brought in a combined total of almost ￡20m of investment. Visitor numbers over the last two years have increased by at least 33%, from 10m to an estimated 13.3m. Chief executive of Blackpool, Steve Weaver, told The MJ without the regeneration work and council expenditure, the business investment 'couldn't physically or commercially have happened', and the increase in financial and cultural terms was a result of 'the strategic planning approach from eight years ago coming to fruition'.
