Attitudes survey reveals shift in tax views

Public attitudes are starting to shift in favour of increasing taxes to fund public services for the first time in over a decade, the latest annual British Social Attitudes report shows. The proportion of people calling for the Government to hike taxes and spend more on public services increased from 31% in 2010 to 36% in 2011, the survey found. This increase halts a continual nine-year de- cline since 2002, when 63% of those surveyed backed greater state spending. But 55% of those questioned want public spending to continue at present levels.
